Mechanical Designer

Do you enjoy designing things that actually get built? We’re looking for a Mechanical Designer to join our engineering team in Nepean, Ontario.

At Light Machinery, we build laser systems and precision optical instruments for customers around the world - the kind of one-of-a-kind hardware that doesn’t exist anywhere else. As part of our team, you’ll be modelling assemblies and components in SolidWorks, working shoulder-to-shoulder with physicists, optical engineers, and machinists - watching your designs go from screen to reality. If you like variety, take pride in craftsmanship, and aren’t afraid of a genuinely tricky design challenge, you’ll fit right in.

What You’ll Do:

  • Create 3D models, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks
  • Work with engineers and scientists to develop mechanical solutions for laser and optical systems
  • Prepare detailed drawings with appropriate tolerances and GD&T
  • Collaborate with our machinists and fabricators to make sure designs can actually be built
  • Iterate on designs based on prototype results and feedback from the shop floor
  • Keep drawing packages, BOMs, and revision history tidy
  • Help out with assembly and troubleshooting when needed

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Has solid, hands-on SolidWorks experience — you’re comfortable with complex assemblies and detailed drawings
  • Understands how things are made: machining, sheet metal, and general precision fabrication
  • Can read and create engineering drawings properly (tolerancing, fits, GD&T)
  • Is organized and comfortable managing multiple projects at once
  • Communicates well and genuinely enjoys collaborating with a mixed team of engineers and tradespeople
  • Brings a positive attitude and a sense of humour — we’re a small team and we like it that way
  • An engineering degree isn’t required. We’re happy to hear from candidates with diplomas, technical certificates, trade backgrounds, or good old-fashioned experience. If you can design things that work, we want to talk.

Experience in optics, precision mechanics, or similar niche fields is a bonus — but if you’re curious and a quick learner, we can work with that too.

What We Offer:

  • Dental care
  • Disability insurance
  • Extended health care
  • Life insurance
  • On-site parking
  • Paid time off (lots)
  • RRSP match
  • Vision care
