Machinist — Manual and CNC
Nepean, Ontario (Colonnade Road) · Full-time, permanent · Day shift
LightMachinery designs and builds precision optics, pulsed gas lasers, and high-resolution spectrometers. Our parts go into satellites and space-agency missions, semiconductor manufacturing tools, national labs, observatories, and university research groups.Our machine shop makes parts for our products as well as tooling and jigs for our other processes. We're looking for a machinist who is equally at home at a manual mill or lathe and at a CNC control, and who programs in Solidworks.
What you'll do
- Machine one-off and small-batch parts to drawing, working in aluminum, stainless, brass, copper and engineering plastics
- Set up and run both manual and CNC mills and lathes
- Program toolpaths in Solidworks CAM directly from our engineers' native models, and speak up when a feature would be easier, cheaper or more accurate made a different way
- Hold tight tolerances on parts where flatness, squareness, and surface finish matter more than cycle time
- Inspect your own work with micrometers, height gauges, bore gauges and CMM as required, and record results
- Work directly with design engineers and the optics and laser groups
- Keep machines, tooling and the shop in good order, including routine preventive maintenance
What we're looking for
- About ten years of machining experience, including both manual and CNC work on current equipment
- Solid working knowledge of Solidworks— able to open a native model, read the design intent, build the fixturing or workholding you need, and modify geometry when a part has to be machined in stages
- CAM programming experience, ideally in Solidworks CAM. If you program in another package today and are ready to move to Solidworks CAM, that’s fine. We are happy to take a strong programmer who can learn our toolset.
- Confident reading engineering drawings and GD&T
- Able to plan your own work from a drawing and a due date: fixturing, sequence, tooling, inspection
- A trade certificate (Ontario 429A General Machinist or equivalent) is an asset, as is experience in a low-volume job shop, optics, vacuum, or scientific instrument environment
Schedule
Day shift, Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week.

Job Summary: LightMachinery Inc. is seeking a Electrical Technician to join its team in Nepean, Ontario. The successful candidate will support the design, testing, and quality assurance of electrical and electronic components and systems used in the company's precision lasers and optical instrumentation. This role involves hands-on work inspecting and evaluating incoming components, conducting life and burn-in testing, building and testing prototypes, and calibrating electrical and electronic test equipment in line with technical specifications.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assist in the design, development and testing of electrical and electronic components, equipment, and systems
- Assist in inspection, testing, adjusting and evaluation of incoming electrical, electro-mechanical and electrical components and assemblies to ensure conformance with product specifications and tolerances
- Conduct life tests (burn-ins) on assemblies and record and analyse results
- Assist in building and testing prototypes to specifications
- Carry out a limited range of technical functions in support of research in electrical and electronic engineering and physics
- Install, operate and maintain electrical and electronic equipment and systems
- Calibrate electrical or electronic equipment and instruments according to technical manuals and written instructions
- Collect and compile operational or experimental data and assist in the preparation of estimates, schedules, budgets, specifications and reports.
Minimum Skills Requirement:
- Must have a minimum of a university degree or college diploma in electrical or electronics engineering, computer engineering technology, or a related field.
- At least two (2) years of prior work experience with high voltage electronics and electrical safety related to high voltage and laser radiation is required;
- Must be proficient in verbal and written English; and
- Must be dependable, have strong attention to detail, and possess effective communication skills.
